Heart related question ?

In my grandma’s medical book it says this :

" Exercise and stress both activate the body’s ‘fight-or-flight’ system and increase heart-rate, but repeated alerting of the system without accompanying physical activity is probably harmful."

What does this mean in reality and what about people who have say panic attacks on a regular basis ?

thanks

First of all, it says "probably" there is no conclusive evidence but the effects stress has on the body are well documented.

Basically when you are in stressful situations or you are upset, your body goes into fight or flight response. Levels of adrenaline and cortisol are increased in the body, which increases heart rate, redirects blood flow to the muscles, increases breathing rate and tenses muscles etc. All these processes are intended to help you fight off or run from a threatening situation.

The problem is, your body doesn’t know the difference between a real threatening situation and a situation where we are just anxious but not in immediate danger, so it reacts to all stress in the same way. Generally speaking these short term physiological changes are of no long-term consequence. The problem comes when people who suffer anxiety disorders go through this daily, sometimes more than once a day.

Stress responses can halt other physiological processes, there is some suggestion that prolonged stress responses can lead to suppression of the immune system meaning you are more prone to infections. It’s thought that short term spikes in BP pose no risk to health but some research suggests that continued stress responses, resulting in short term spikes, may pose a threat to health.

There is no conclusive evidence though.

consumer reports on senior medical alert systems/buttons?

I am looking for consumer reports on what senior medical alert systems are the best.

I couldn’t find any consumer reports on medical alerts, just a bunch of ads. You will probably have to do the research for yourself. Many of the reviews you are going to see on the internet are actually not reviews but affiliate marketers making a commission on the sale of the medical alert system. My advice is to choose a company that you feel comfortable with. Call them up on the phone and talk with them. If you get an automated answering system, forget about. You want to be treated like your a human being and not some number to be added to their bottom line.

Here are a few companies I have heard of:

www.MedFirstAlert.com - 800-595-0718
www.lifealert.com - 800-360-0329
www.alert1.com - 866-581-4540
www.seniorsafety.com - 888-473-2800
www.lifestation.com - 877-354-3050

Why can’t basic medical supplies ONLY be dropped by helicopter to the makeshift hospitals that they know of.?

I know there is a lot of problems with food drops from helicopters but what about getting antibiotics, bandages, stetescopes, blood pressure arm bands, and other basic medical supplies be dropped off at that main hospital they keep showing on CNN that they are saying people are getting gangrene. At least they can have some comfort - pain pills, etc…

Because if we did this the aid would never get to the hospital.

This is a part of the world where anything that is not under armed guard will be stolen.

Why are media crews not required to carry 75 pounds per person of food and medical supplies?

They seem to be landing their planes in Haiti, and getting where no one can go. Are all the folks in these news crews bringing supplies with them or are they content to just take pictures?
Presenters included.

If they aren’t bringing supplies with them, they should. However, from what I’ve heard just from reading about it they are primarily focusing on making sure their own crews have food, water and adequate protection. I suppose that would be anyone’s first priority though.

I did stroll into the upstairs game room a couple days ago and a housemate had CNN on the TV up there. The anchors in the US were trying to talk to Dr. Sanjay Gupta and couldn’t get him to respond to them. He had pretty much taken off his mike/dropped his mike and was rendering medical treatment to survivors in a makeshift medical clinic made of what appeared to be tenting or tarps and dirty blankets on the ground. The crew on the ground there told the US anchors that there had been more doctors there, but there was a security issue developing so they all left. Dr. Gupta refused to leave and was the only one there treating all of those patients. I suddenly developed a very strong liking for the man. Compassion seems to be a rare thing these days, only peeking out when something horrible happens. However, I got the impression that Dr. Gupta is one of those people who value compassion greatly and then actually acts on it all the time, not just during a disaster/crisis situation. That right there made me happy (as much as one can be when viewing such horrors anyway).

Since cruise ships are also docking in Haiti again, I know they are bringing a lot of medical supplies and food with them as well. Well, I HEARD/read they were at least. I think it’s true because it just makes sense. That and of course I hope with all my tiny, dark little heart that it IS true.

Need help paying for medical supplies?

I have a friend that needs help paying for his colostomy bags and wafers. He is on unemployment and is not eligible for medicaid. He does not get enough on unemployment to cover his medical supplies. Any ideas?

depending on the type of disease or disorder….go online and look for organizations that specialize in the treatment of the disease/disorder…they usually have resources….or just pick up the phone and dial 211 and ask for local resources to help…..

Should i volunteer my services to go to Haiti to help or should i just try & help from here at home?

I have been seriously considering volunteering my services to go to Haiti to help in that horrible situation there. My family & friends however don’t want to me to go as they think i wouldn’t be able to handle seeing the death & destruction there as well as fearing for my safety. They think i should just volunteer here at home by going to services where you can help pack & get the food & medical supplies ready to ship to Haiti. What are your thoughts & how would you handle the situation? Thanks everyone.

Listen to your family, they love you and want you safe at home. Unless you are trained like others have said, it would be tough on you. It really shows a big heart to want to go to Hailti and help, but I do agree with your family. Volunteer at home, Haiti needs people on this end to help as well. You would be very valuable in your efforts to get supplies to them.

Unfortunately if everyone who wanted to volunteer in Haiti simply packed up and flew to that country, more chaos would ensue and very little actual help would be administered. After the initial weeks of International disaster relief have taken place there will likley be opportunities for church and missions groups to volunteer in Haiti, but for now prospective volunteers are being asked to refrain from making travel plans unless they are medical personnel trained in disaster relief.

"Volunteers without prior disaster relief experience are generally not selected for relief assignments. Candidates with the greatest chance of being selected have fluency in the language of the disaster-stricken area, prior disaster relief experience, and expertise in technical fields such as medicine, communications logistics, water/sanitation engineering. In many cases, these professionals are already available in-country. Most agencies will require at least ten years of experience, as well as several years of experience working overseas. " (Center for International Disaster Information)

For now, those wishing to volunteer in Haiti would serve the country best by making a donation to the Red Cross or other relief aid organization.

Why are people standing in line in Haiti Pharmacies trying to BUY medical supplies?

Why have the shop owners not donated these things since the entire world is putting together a humanitarian effort to send medicine, food, and everything imaginable? Why are Haiti citizens not ALL joined in to help their own people?
Kuhita: So, what you are saying is that everyone who is donating to these people who are seriously wounded and dieing should SELL it to them instead?

Ingrid: Because I saw the pics and film of what they were buying. There were no scripts involved (not to mention prescriptions are not needed for every tiny thing like they are in the USA or other countries).

The Haitians who have money are too smart to waste it on the other Haitians. They expect the stupid Americans to do that.

Why must the US provide aid to every nation that experiences a natural disaster?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: home medical supplies

Seems like the US is on their own when disaster strikes at home. We are still reeling from the greatest recession since the great depression, yet, we can send 100 million to Haiti as well as food, security, water, medical supplies. Seems like we need this type of assistance here at home first.

I completely agree with you. The aftermath of the Hurricane Katrina tragedy is STILL not completed. Thousands of people are still homeless and many businesses are in need of help to reopen. Your economy is a disaster and hundreds of thousands of people have lost their homes, jobs, vehicles and many families have been separated because of it. It is a sad situation. In Canada, we have a plundering economy as well, but because of our lower population, it does not seem as devastating as to the people of the U.S.

My personal opinion of the U.S. government providing "aid" to other nations in trouble is to "look good" to the rest of the world. They have a bad reputation with other countries, but money talks and the U.S. has money to give. Please forgive my bluntness. I love the American people. I just hate the way your government operates and treats their own people.

What would happen if an elderly individual sold all their assets for long term care than the health care?

proposal kicks in and makes their long term care free?

So let’s say in 2013 an elderly individual is forced to sell all of their assets to cover their long term care. 2014 rolls around and with the newest health care bill, their long term care is now free.

What would happen to the monies given to Medicaid to cover her long term care prior to the bill be passed?

Yeah, we need to keep it just the way it is. Work your whole life just to have enough money to pay for end of life care. Why shouldn’t an American health ins. company be allowed to collect every Americans life long earnings for something everybody will need? I think the only thing better for American health ins. companies, is for the govt. to subsidize it by giving our tax money to the ins. companies to provide the most basic of care. The ins. companies are not making those record profits by actually approving claims. The ins. companies also need be subsidized with our tax dollars in order to really rake in the cash. Why can’t the ‘libs’ realize that corporate profits are more patriotic and American than the poor people needing medical care. Look where we are in life expectancy. We are ahead of Cuba in deaths. YEAH ! USA !
